Fairtrade Coffees

Fairtrade: A little similar to the traceability of the Organic Coffee, but the focus is on social compensation to the third world. Every 1lb of coffee sold by the farmer has a premium of 10cents per dollar. The operation is run by cooperatives who oversee the local Fairtrade sales. At the end of the season the money earned is gathered together  and allocated to the farms or communities that require certain benefits, eg, sanitation, water cleansing, schools, medical facilities, road info structure etc. This operation is overseen by the Fairtrade Labelling Systems (FLO). Under this umbrella local organisations in various countries have their own marketing operations to put into practice. They charge 1.3/4 % of all sales by registered producers to pay for the operation. They then monitor & audit to make sure they are getting their money. We come under the Fairtrade Association.
